Objectives

The Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship is designed to make a University of Melbourne bachelor's degree more financially accessible to students from lower-income countries who would otherwise face the full burden of international tuition fees. The 25 percent fee reduction is not a full ride — it is a partial subsidy intended to reduce financial barriers rather than eliminate them. The program targets academically capable international students from developing economies who have already secured entry into an undergraduate program at the university, rewarding academic readiness over financial need alone.

Eligibility, plainly

Two hard gates stand between an applicant and this scholarship. First, your passport must be from a country with a GDP per capita of US$10,000 or less according to World Bank data — this is a citizenship check, not a residency check, so holding permanent residency in a wealthier country while holding a passport from a qualifying nation does not automatically resolve this. Second, you must have already applied for and met the entry requirements for an Overseas Fee place in a bachelor's degree at the University of Melbourne, meaning you cannot hold a domestic fee place or a government-sponsored place. If either condition is not met, the application goes no further regardless of academic merit.

Because the scholarship is tied to meeting entry requirements rather than exceeding them by a large margin, academic standing matters primarily as a gatekeeping factor — though applicants with strong secondary school results in relevant subjects will have cleared the entry bar more convincingly. Given the Arts field designation, a candidate with demonstrated engagement in humanities, social sciences, languages, or creative disciplines who can show how studying in Melbourne advances a specific intellectual or professional goal will present a more coherent application than one who treats the Arts degree as a default choice.
