Chevening Scholarships

Objectives

Chevening is a UK soft power instrument, not just a merit scholarship — it is explicitly designed to identify and invest in future leaders who will return to their home countries and maintain influential relationships with the UK over their careers. The FCDO is building a global alumni network of decision-makers in government, civil society, media, and business. The ideal candidate is not simply academically excellent; they are someone who is already on an upward trajectory in their field and whose future influence in their country the UK has a strategic interest in cultivating.

Eligibility, plainly

The four hard requirements are largely binary: you either meet them or you don't. Citizenship of an eligible Chevening country is non-negotiable and must be verified — dual nationals should check their specific country's eligibility status carefully. The two-year work experience requirement means post-undergraduate professional work, not internships or student placements, and it must be accumulated before the application deadline. An undergraduate degree is required at any classification, as Chevening does not specify a minimum GPA, which removes one common barrier. The most operationally demanding requirement is securing three unconditional offers from UK universities by the specified deadline — applicants must proactively apply to and be accepted by universities independently, before the scholarship is confirmed, which requires parallel-tracking the application process and incurs real upfront cost and effort.

What a strong applicant looks like

A competitive Chevening applicant has a clear, evidence-based leadership arc — not just a senior job title, but a documented record of initiating and driving outcomes: founding an organization, leading a policy reform, managing a team through a measurable project, or building a professional network with cross-sector reach. They are typically mid-career, roughly three to eight years post-graduation, at a point where a UK master's degree would credibly accelerate their trajectory rather than redirect it entirely. Their proposed field of study connects directly and specifically to the work they have already been doing, and they can name the UK universities and programs they are targeting because those programs offer something — a faculty member, a research center, a curriculum track — unavailable at home. Applicants who have represented their country or sector at international forums, published in professional or academic outlets, or held elected or appointed leadership roles in professional bodies stand out because Chevening assessors are evaluating long-term influence potential, not just current achievement.
